A column is a vertical pillar or post. Columns may support a roof or beam, or serve a purely decorative purpose. The lower part of a column is called the base, the upper part — the capital, and the section it supports — the entablature. Classical columns are built according to the Orders of Classical Architecture, systematized in the late 16th century by Renaissance architect Giacomo Vignola.
