An EPS core is used for exterior trim elements. This material has three important properties. It does not absorb moisture structurally. This is a characteristic of the foam itself. Therefore, it does not swell, rot, or mold, even if exposed to rain or damp conditions for long periods. It retains its shape for years. It does not warp or shrink. The sharp angle created during production will remain the same after twenty-five years. This material is easily machined on CNC machines with an accuracy of up to half a millimeter. Any profiles, overhangs, and decorative details can be cut for the entire set.

However, it is important to understand the limitations of the material. EPS itself cannot withstand impacts. It is not used as a finished surface on façades. Before installation outdoors, any EPS component must be covered with a polyurethane foam shell.

Classical garage door surrounds draw from the same architectural vocabulary as front door surrounds and window hoods—pilasters, pediments, cornices, keystones, and entablatures. Are modern minimalist garage door trim systems available?

Yes. Not every project calls for classical ornament. Can Garage Door Trim Kits Replicate Stone or Wood?

Yes. The PU foam shell provides a dense and hard surface that accepts faux stone finish coatings with excellent adhesion and consistent texture results. A skilled applicator using textured elastomeric paint, concrete-effect coating, or mineral silicate finish produces a result visually indistinguishable from carved limestone, travertine, or sandstone at normal facade viewing distances.

Foam garage door surrounds accept wood-grain faux finishes for Craftsman and bungalow applications where the natural wood aesthetic is desired without wood’s maintenance burden. Several finishing options are available. Create a smooth painted surface using acrylic or elastomeric exterior paint. Any color is suitable. This option is standard for colonial, contemporary, and modern styles. Faux stone or cast stone finishes are also available. These textured finishes imitate limestone, sandstone, travertine, or cast stone. They are often used in Mediterranean and neoclassical styles. Another option is a stucco finish coat. Apply thin-layer plaster or the finishing coat of an exterior insulation system to the polyurethane foam. This allows for a perfect blend of the decor with the plastered façade. For the "Craftsman" style, a wood texture that imitates painted or stained wood is suitable. For maximum durability outdoors, use a protective polyurea coating. This is a completely waterproof and UV-resistant barrier.

Installation Process

A typical two-car surround kit installs in 2–4 hours for an experienced crew. Compare this to a full day or more for precast stone. Prepare the garage wall surface around the opening. Clean it of any peeling paint, old plaster, or sealant residue. The surface must be dry and sound. If the façade is plastered, lightly sand or score the contact areas with the pieces to ensure better adhesive adhesion.

Next, mark the wall. Use chalk lines or a level to accurately mark the edges of the pilasters, the bottom line of the lintel, and the top of the gable. Before applying the adhesive, drill pilot holes in the areas where the mechanical fasteners will be installed. A fitting test is essential. Place each piece without adhesive, checking that it fits properly, is level vertically and horizontally, and that the joints align correctly. This will prevent any adjustments after the adhesive has been applied. This ensures symmetry across the entire width of the opening.

Next, apply a construction adhesive compatible with polyurethane foam to the back of each piece. Apply adhesive in a strip around the perimeter and in a zigzag pattern down the center. For large components, such as lintels and pediments, apply the adhesive in sections. Now press the components into place, starting from the bottom. First, the pilaster bases, then their shafts, then the capitals, then the entablature band, and finally the pediment. Work systematically from the bottom up. For lintel components, work from the center outward.

After this, the components are further secured mechanically. Screws made of stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized are driven into the marked locations, countersinking the heads. Use at least one fastener per 24 inches of component length (this is for garage framing). All joints between components, edges along the wall, and screw holes are filled with flexible exterior sealant, smoothing the sealant lines until it hardens. Pay particular attention to the joint at the top of the pediment with the wall. There should be no gaps there where water can enter.

The final step is the finishing coat. Paint, plaster, or artificial texture is applied according to specifications. The polyurethane foam surface is already primed at the Royal Foam US plant. Typically, one coat of exterior primer and one topcoat is sufficient. It is important that all joints filled with sealant are covered with paint or finish to create a seamless appearance.

This foam is inherently non-absorbent, meaning it won't rot, swell, or mold on the inside. The exterior is covered with a polyurethane foam shell with a density of approximately 15 pounds per cubic foot. The PU surface accepts any exterior finish, including paint, artificial stone, stucco, patina, or a protective polyurea layer. The addition of polyurea creates a completely waterproof and UV-resistant barrier, tested to ASTM G154 (tested for over 5,000 hours). Now about the limitations. These parts are decorative only and are not designed to support load-bearing or structural loads. The EPS core requires a Polyurea outer shell. Bare foam cannot be used as a finished outer surface. If you strike the shell with a sharp object, such as a drill or chisel, and apply force, you can puncture the Polyurea layer and damage the inner EPS. These elements are not suitable for areas where vehicle impacts are possible, such as the lower edges of garage ramps or areas with protective elements are supplied prefabricated and ready to install.
